Nine get life term for SAD worker’s murder

A local court today sentenced nine persons to life imprisonment for the murder of a Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) worker in 2014. Then 28, Gurjant Singh Janta was killed in a clash between two groups in Kambali village.

One of the accused, Gaurav Patial, alias Lucky, is still on the run. He is said to be gangster Dilpreet Dahan’s accomplice and part of the ‘wanted list’ of the Mohali police.

The other eight convicts are Sukhpreet Singh, Kuldeep Singh, Dalbir Singh, Harpreet Singh Toor, Gagandeep Singh, Rupinder Singh, Kamaldeep Singh and Gursewak Singh. While seven of them will pay Rs 23,500 as fine, Gursewak will pay Rs 25,500 as fine. The convicts were found guilty under Section 302 read with Sections 148/149, 341 and 506 of the IPC, while Gursewak was also found guilty under Section 25 of the Arms Act.

The matter dates back to July 7, 2014, when Gurjant, along with two others, had gone to have liquor in a vehicle. The convicts arrived there and attacked Gurjant with sharp weapons. The reason was stated to be old enmity between the two groups. The two groups had clashed twice in the preceeding two months as well.
