No relief from rising onion prices in sight

CHANDIGARH: While the Chandigarh Administration is waiting for a response from the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) for giving onions at cheaper price, there is no sign of a decline in the current rates.

Chandigarh, December 5

While the Chandigarh Administration is waiting for a response from the  National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) for  giving onions at cheaper  price, there is no sign of  a decline in the current rates.

Onions continued to be sold at Rs 100   per kg in various sectors . Sumit Kumar, a trader, said the  supply had reduced  further in the fruit  and vegetable market. Good quality onion was still available at more than Rs 100 per kg in retail markets, he said.

The Administration had written  to the Government of India   seeking  its   intervention in keeping the onion prices under check and requested the NAFED  to ensure adequate supply of onion in the city.  The  Administration will  start  selling onion at cheaper  rates  once  it gets  a reponse from the NAFED. — TNS
