Now, paramilitary staff can opt for defence studies

CHANDIGARH: The Regulations Committee of Panjab University (PU) on Friday approved for the admission of paramilitary personnel with five years of regular service in defence and strategic studies.

The Regulations Committee of Panjab University (PU) on Friday approved for the admission of paramilitary personnel with five years of regular service in defence and strategic studies. Earlier, it was open only for personnel of Army, Air Force and Navy.

For other candidates, the condition of marks has been approved. Now, 50 per cent of marks are required in bachelor’s degree in the aggregate or BA with honours in the subject of defence and strategic studies would be considered.

If a candidate has passed defence and strategic studies at graduate level then 45 per cent marks are required in the subject and 50 per cent in aggregate is required.

“The Regulations Committee has approved that the candidates seeking admission in BA (honours) Economics and BA/BCom-LLB ( five year course) must not be above 20 years of age as on August 1 of the year in which admission is sought while in case of SC/ST it has been relaxed till 22 years,” said Prof Navdeep Goyal, chairperson of Physics Department and part of PU Regulations Committee.

The Advance Diploma in Labour Laws and Advanced Diploma in Taxation will not be a part time course now but a full time one-year course. The regulation that these courses are open for in-service people has been removed on Friday.

The regulations for diploma holders seeking admission in engineering have also been changed. Now, if the candidates have re-appear or compartment in Diploma in Engineering they would not be eligible for admission even if they clear the compartment by the time of counselling. Also, the condition of Physics and Mathematics in three year diploma course has also been made mandatory. If a candidate has passed his diploma before 2015, they would not be entertained.

Retirement age of physically challenged 

  • The Regulations Committee deferred changing the retirement age of physically challenged employees. A letter of the Punjab government was placed before the committee which said that  the retirement age was already 60 the concession of two years enhancement should not be given.

Eligibility for other candidates

  • For other candidates, the condition of marks has been approved. Now, 50 per cent of marks are required in bachelor's degree in the aggregate or BA with honours in the subject of defence and strategic studies would be considered for the admission in the course. However, there is no percentage for defence personnel.
