Chandigarh, January 16

The Municipal Corporation today served a revised property tax notice of Rs 5.62 crore on the PGI. Earlier, a Rs 6.82-crore notice was served, but after a clarification from the PGI, the MC revised it.

The PGI was served a notice for payment due since 2004. However, work on some of its buildings was completed in 2009 and 2011. After hearing the PGI, the corporation sent it a revised notice of Rs 5,62,29,000. The premier institute has been asked to make the payment by January 31.

If it fails to pay, a final notice will be served. Following this, the sealing process will start. The MC has already issued an order of cancellation of lease of a leading hotel in Sector 35 due to non-payment of tax.

Sources said the tax branch of the civic body had collected around Rs 30 crore from tax defaulters in the past eight months. It conducted a survey of property tax defaulters in September last year and then started serving notices.

Now, people are rushing to deposit the tax. Earlier, neither the MC bothered to collect the tax nor people came forward to pay it. The MC is calculating the tax default amount of houses and commercial places.
