Chandigarh: Heavy rain  left residents in many sectors of the city without power for hours. Branches of trees fell on electricity wires, resulting in the outage. The department also snapped power supply to many areas as a precautionary measure to avoid mishaps while carrying out repair work. The affected areas included Sector 7, 8, 17, 18, 19, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 30, 31, 37, 38, 39, 40,   41 and 44, and Burail and parts of some villages.  Sector  30 residents faced  an outage  for over  three  hours  in the morning. The agony of residents increased with the phone lines of complaint centres remaining busy for most part of the day. Complaints continued to pour in at the complaint centres  throughout the  day, making the task difficult for  the staff.  An MC official said six trees  were uprooted  in  different sectors due to the rain. A resident of Sector 42 said they faced power failure for over two hours.

An officer said they started restoration work soon after the rain and the supply was restored in many parts within half an hour. Low-lying areas in the city such as the Industrial Area, Phase 1, Ram Darbar, Mani Majra and Hallo Majra were severely affected.
