SSP asks girls to become agents of change in society

SSP Jagdale Nilambari Vijay’s first interaction with the students at the Dev Samaj College for Women, Sector 45, left her surprised when a student reciting a past incident claimed that once she and her friend were eve teased by four persons sitting in a car among whom one claimed to be a police inspector.

The college student sharing her experience claimed that she was new to the city and had gone to the bus stand along with her friend during night to eat something when the accused eve teased them. “When we objected to it, the accused abused us and broke an empty beer bottle in front of us. One of them claimed that he is an inspector,” said the student.

She further added that the police was informed following which cops arrived at the spot, however by then the accused had left. “The cops didn’t pursue my complaint,” alleged the student.

Taking a note of the incident expressed by the student, the SSP told her to give the details of the incident and assured her that she would get it inquired.

As the interaction progressed, other students also started sharing their experiences and sought suggestions from the SSP to deal with situations.

One of the students revealed sexual harassment by an old man in the bus while travelling from Kharar to Chandigarh. The student was touched inappropriately by a man; however, she remained quite fearing that the people will blame her if she raises the issue.

Giving an advice to all the students, the SSP urged them not to stay quite in cases of sexual harassment. “Without fearing anything you should report the matter to the police. Moreover, we will ensure that the identity of the victim is not revealed,” said the SSP.

Another college student during the interaction quoted the example of her friend who was sexually harassed by a relative. Revealing about the trend of crime against woman, the SSP said that in a large number of cases the accused were known to the victim.

“Be the agents of change in the society by coming forward and reporting such incidents to the police so that corrective measures are taken and accused are punished,” said SSP Jagdale Nilambari Vijay.
