50 quintals of organic seeds sent to Nepal

DEHRADUN: Dehradun-based Navdanya Biodiversity Conservation Farm has sent nearly 50 quintals of organic seeds to earthquake-hit Nepal as assistance to farmers.

Dehradun-based Navdanya Biodiversity Conservation Farm has sent nearly 50 quintals of organic seeds to earthquake-hit Nepal as assistance to farmers.

Navdanya director Dr Vinod Kumar Bhatt, said earthquake in Nepal also led to destruction of seeds. Dr Bhatt said as per guidance of Navdanya founder Dr Vandana Shiva, 50 quintals of maize, paddy, vegetables prominently like gourd, pumpkin, tomatoes and chillies have been sent to Nepal as part of first consignment of assistance.

Navdanya’s officials Pramod Kimoth and Kamal also left for Nepal with the consignment. The seeds will be distributed in Nepal through International Help Mission volunteers.

Agri expert at Navdanya Dr RS Rawat disclosed that seeds sent to Nepal could be sowed both in irrigated and non-irrigated land. He said all these organic seeds had been collected from various districts of the Garhwal division by Navdanya volunteers.

Identified as “Seeds for Hope for Nepal”, Bhatt said Navdanya would send another dispatch of seeds in the second week of June.
