Chandigarh, December 26

In the wake of a bird flu alert in the city, residents calling up on the helpline are more keen on knowing whether they can eat chicken rather than understanding the symptoms of the infection.

The UT Health Department’s special helpline, set up to cater to the anxious residents following the bird flu alert, is flooded with queries on “how safe it is to consume chicken”.

A total of 76 calls were received today and a majority of them pertained to seeking advice on whether to eat chicken and eggs or not.

“We have been telling them that there is no reason to panic but it is important to ensure that the food is completely cooked,” said UT Director Health Services (DHS), Dr VK Gagneja.

Experts suggested that to avoid any apprehensions, residents should avoid half-baked eggs and chicken— mostly used in sandwiches, burgers and pizzas.

The 24-hour helpline 783731503 at the GMSH-16 is being monitored by doctors from the PGIMER and the GMCH-32.
