Kamaljit Singh, who had lodged a complaint against former SGPC chief Bibi Jagir Kaur over her daughter’s death, was convicted in a cheque bounce case today.

He was awarded two-year imprisonment with a fine of Rs 5,000 by a Kapurthala court.

The case was filed by Karandeep Singh in 2009 who had stated that Kamaljit had duped him of Rs 20 lakh on the pretext of sending him to Canada.

Also accusing Kamaljit’s mother Balwinder Kaur, Karandeep said that when the deal could not materialise, Kamaljit — in 2009 — “agreed to sell” a four-kanal land owned by his father for which he was a power of attorney holder. He also gave him a cheque of Rs 7.5 lakh that later bounced as the account number mentioned on it was incorrect. In 2011, Karandeep lodged a complaint with Dhillwan police station under Section 420, 406 of the IPC and 24 of the Immigration Act. Though the court acquitted his mother, Kamaljit was awarded two-year jail.

Though Kamaljit made repeated pleas in court that he was dragged into the case as he had filed a case against Jagir Kaur, he could not produce any proof to support his claim.
