The district has four gaushalas housing over 3,000 cows. All of them are managed by private registered societies, which get financial aid mainly from private institutions or individuals. None of these are directly dependent on government funds, it is learnt.

The most prominent gaushala is located in the Surajkund area here, which has given shelter to over 1,000 cows. Known as Gopal Gaushala, it is well maintained and is spending Rs 1 lakh or more daily for its upkeep. “Run under the aegis of a Hindu organisation, the gaushala is located opposite to Sidhhata Ashram on the Surajkund road. The cows here are given healthy diet and have access to regular health check-ups,” said Tilak Raj of Mewla Maharajpur.

Another big gaushala is located in Mavai village of the district, which is accommodating over 1,000 cows. It is also claimed to be supported by residents of the city, especially those from the Ballabgarh subdivision.

“The state of the gaushalas located in villages has turned poor over the years, mainly due to no constant source of monetary help,” claimed Sunil Bisla, a resident of Dayalpur village.

Officials of the veterinary department were not available for their version regarding the medical examination of the cattle in the gaushalas.
