Solan, August 12

With incessant rain lashing the area since last evening, landslides were visible on several roads in Kasauli.

The roof of an under-construction building at Deoghat gave way yesterday though no loss of life was reported. It led to diversion of traffic to the Kumarhatti bypass where large-scale excavation work had made driving risky.

Motorists had to travel through the risk-prone under-construction road where the width was barely a few feet and the fear of falling boulders loomed large. Since JCB machines and other heavy machinery is constantly engaged in excavating hills, a large quantity of debris has been found along the road. Though metal sheets have been erected, they were not strong enough to withstand the weight of the huge boulders falling from the hills.

“What adds to the risk is the frequent traffic jam owing to the excavation work and this poses threat to motorists of being hit by boulders,” stated Ajay.

Since a Nangal resident had been killed after his vehicle was buried under debris on this stretch at Shamlech a few weeks ago, motorists face a high risk while travelling on this road.

Exposing the poor traffic management, the police barely diverted the traffic through the risk-prone national highway while failing to clear the traffic at Deonghat, putting at risk the lives of the motorists.
