Graduates Welfare Association, an NGO, set up a food stall on the roadside in Ghas Mandi to educate the people about the harmful effects of eating unhealthy food.

They sold fresh fruits such as guava, kinnow and bananas at subsidised rates to show how dirty the fruits get on the roadside. Retired IIT professor Dr Bhupinder Singh, patron of the association, said his research indicated that a large number of residents were falling ill by eating substandard food.

Unauthorised persons start selling their products without abiding by the norms. The food products sold on the roadside were exposed to dust, germs and particulate matter. This could cause serious ailments among consumers, he added.
