Chandigarh, April 17

Taking no chances, city residents queued up at the Sector 22 veterinary hospital for getting their pets vaccinated.

The number of visitors to the hospital has increased considerably after a rabid dog bit 13 children in Mani Majra.

The hospital has witnessed an increase in visitors after Sadia, one of the victims bitten by the rabid dog in Mani Majra, died of rabies in the PGI two days ago.

A veterinarian at the hospital said due to frequent dog-bite incidents in the city and surrounding areas, the residents visited the hospital in large numbers.

“Interestingly, some of the residents visited the hospital with stray dogs,” said a senior veterinary doctor.

Since the UT Administration is providing anti-rabies vaccine (ARV) free of cost, the number of visitors has increased.

it was found that dogs were accompanied by security guards of politicians and policemen.

As per the records, the population of pets outnumbered the population of stray dogs. As per the dog census (2012), the city had 9,984 pets and 7,978 stray dogs. The number has increased to 14,000 and 12,000, respectively.
