Chandigarh, July 27

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) today issued directions to the Jaypee Group to run the garbage processing plant at Dadu Majra till further orders.

The Delhi Bench of the NGT was hearing the case pertaining to the garbage processing plant at Dadu Majra.

During the hearing, the NGT directed the Jaypee Group not to close the plant and continue running it till further orders. Besides, directions were also issued to the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation to consider the issue of tipping charges.

The NGT said a four-member committee should be set up to check the day to day functioning of the plant. The members of the committee will include the Chandigarh Municipal Commissioner, Member Secretaries of the Pollution Control Boards, Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh, and a representative of the Jaypee Group.

The next hearing was deferred to August 12.

Chandigarh Mayor Arun Sood welcomed the decision of the NGT and said it was in favour of the city residents. The NGT held that it was in favour of the city residents.

Earlier, the Jaypee Group had shut the plant on July 11 and thereafter, the MC had moved the Shimla Bench of the NGT. Following the MC application, the NGT had directed the Jaypee Group to start the garbage processing plant at Dadu Majra by July 27.In November last year, the MC House had rejected the agenda for providing tipping charges to the Jaypee Group for processing garbage.

A letter from the plant management was placed before the MC House at a meeting on February 29 in which it was stated that the plant management was suffering a loss of Rs 50 lakh every month and unless the MC paid the tipping fee, it would shut the plant on March 31. Thereafter, the company had agreed and finally, the plant was closed on July 11. After the NGT’s directions, the Jaypee Group restarted the plant on July 25.
