The building of Government Girls Senior Secondary School at Kharawar village in Rohtak district was declared unsafe and demolished more than a year ago. Funds for construction of a new building have been sanctioned, but construction work has not been started till date.

Thanks to the inordinate delay in starting construction, girl students of Classes I to XII have to be accommodated in classrooms of the adjoining building of Government Senior Secondary School despite space crunch.

“Funds meant for construction of the school building were sanctioned more than 10 months ago. Tenders are yet to be floated. We have been running from pillar to post to get the school building constructed, but to no avail,” said Capt (retd) Jagvir Malik, chairman of the Village Education Council.

Rajbir Singh, a social activist of Kharawar village, pointed out that the girls’ school in the village had neither a building nor a regular principal.

“An amount of Rs1.97 crore was sanctioned for construction of the school building in January. The project is caught in a technical tangle as the PWD (B&R) authorities have been told to transfer the amount to the Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan functionaries,” he said.

He claimed that slogans like ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ were ‘jumlas’ aimed at fooling the people. He rued that their efforts failed to bear fruit.

Village sarpanch Bijender Malik said they had apprised senior government officials as well as legislators, but no concrete action was taken on their pleas.

Rohtak District Education Officer Parmeshwari Hooda said the panchayat had passed a resolution that it wanted to get the building constructed by the PWD (B&R) and the request was forwarded to the state Project Director.
