Solan residents will soon get rid of contaminated water during the rains with the state’s first UV system being installed at the lift water supply scheme of the Ashwani Khud by the Irrigation and Public Health (IPH) Department.

The need to install the system has been necessitated following pollution threat in the water of the Ashwani Khad. As many as 834 cases of jaundice had surfaced in Solan in 2016 where two water schemes were found contaminated with sewage.

It will have the capacity to disinfect 5 million litres of water per day which will benefit about 22,000 people. About Rs 85 lakh is being incurred initially for its installation which will be undertaken in June.

The firm, engaged to install it, will also provide a comprehensive annual maintenance for 5 years after the completion of 2-year warranty period.

The system can also be replicated in other schemes which are vulnerable to contamination.

Superintending Engineer, IPH Department, Sanjeev Kaul said the UV system can destroy 99.99 per cent harmful micro-organisms without adding chemicals or changing the taste or odour of water.

He added that it destroyed germs by causing a molecular change in their DNA make-up that prevented them from multiplying and destroyed the ability to spread disease.
