National Conference (NC) general secretary Ali Mohammad Sagar on Sunday claimed that the condition of Srinagar’s roads was “pitiable and appalling” which debunked the claims of the Governor’s administration on providing basic and effective amenities to the people here.

Sagar, who toured several localities of the Khanyar constituency, said the administration had “miserably failed to rise up to the developmental demands of the city”. “The government had claimed that Rs 8,000 crore have been earmarked for the development of Srinagar. We had sent eight projects from this segment for government’s approval but so far, there has been no head way,” he said.

The urban life of Srinagar city “is beseeching for basic amenities”. “The city roads, inner routes and alleys are dotted with potholes. There has been no upgrade of the existing infrastructure. The street lights are non-operational on various arterial roads,” Sagar claimed.

He said the administration had also failed to maintain price stability in the city. “In our times, we used to deploy flying squads to check price rise and other irregularities, including black marketing. The festivities of Ramzan have been dampened by the rampant scarcity of mutton and other edibles. The sky rocketing prices of essential commodities is also adding to the mounting woes of people,” he added.
