Jalandhar, December 21

A Jalandhar-based man, who had allegedly solemnised three marriages without giving divorce to his previous two wives, landed in the police net today.

He was arrested from Ambala by the women’s police cell.

Avtar Kaur, inspector, women cell, said the accused was identified as Harnoor Singh, a resident of Gold Avenue in Maqsudan. He had been disowned by his parents.

The accused, who is 28-year-old, had come from Cyprus.

Harnoor had solemnised his first marriage with Jasmeet Kaur of Hoshiarpur in 2011. After he was booked by the police in a dowry harassment case under Sections 498-A and 406 of the IPC in December 2013 on the complaint of his first wife Jasmeet, the duo was yet to divorce and talks of compromise were still on.

In the meantime in June 2013, Harnoor solemnsed his second marriage with Ranjit Kaur of Hardev Nagar in Jalandhar. Without giving divorce to even Ranjit, he solemnised the third marriage with Davinder Kaur of Ambala in 2014 and had been living in Ambala after the marriage.

“After we came to know about the third marriage, we have registered a fresh case under Section 494 of the IPC against Harnoor. Yesterday, we got a tip-off that the accused had been residing in Ambala by solemnising the third marriage. Our police party raided the place in Ambala and nabbed him,” the police said.

The police also recovered the marriage certificate of the second and third marriage from the respective places.

The accused was today also produced in court, but the court did not give any police remand.

The women cell had also initiated the proceedings of declaring the accused a proclaimed offender in the case.
