Mumbai expecting big hike this time

It's appraisal time and all professionals are looking forward toward getting a good increment. The most optimistic, according to a survey conducted by job portal Shine.com, are the professionals working in Mumbai, Pune and Chennai - they are expecting pay hikes above 20 per cent. In Delhi-NCR and Bengaluru, the outlook isn't very positive, with professionals expecting a raise between 0-10 per cent.

The survey, a first-of-its-kind that focussed on the expectations of employees instead of a top-down HR or company-led perspective, found that almost 37 per cent people in Mumbai are expecting an increment above 20 per cent, while in Pune and Chennai, the number is 36 per cent and 38 per cent respectively. In Bengaluru, 21 per cent people are expecting appraisals up to 10 per cent, while about 20 per cent people in Delhi NCR on expecting raise on the lower side.

In the survey, Bengaluru emerged as one of the least demanding cities in terms of pay hikes, as one-fifth of all respondents in the city mentioned that they would be satisfied with up to 10 per cent increment. Sectors including BFSI, IT and BPOs, that already offer high packages to employees are the ones driving these low expectations. As there is an abundance of talent in the city, especially in the IT and e-commerce sectors, it is no surprise that professionals are expecting lower appraisals.

Surprisingly, although Bangalore has been India's IT hub for years, its e-commerce sector is expecting much lower appraisals as compared to Delhi. Over 46 per cent of Bengaluru's e-commerce sector employees are expecting an average growth of 11-15 per cent;  in Delhi, however, the appraisal sentiment is high with over 1/3rd professionals expecting a hike of over 20 per cent. — TNS
