Let’s talk about oneness

To highlight teachings and ideologies of Guru Nanak in the sixteenth century, which was way ahead of its time, Dr Swaraj Singh launched a book on the occasion of 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak, titled Guru Nanak Sahib Di Brahmandi Soch. 

Dr Singh, a retired cardiovascular surgeon, had spent 40 years in the USA and now lives in Patiala, has written more than 22 books. Also, he is a columnist, who writes for renowned newspapers in Russia and China apart from The Tribune. He says, “The days of negative and embedded journalism are numbered. Change will definitely come”. He asserts, “Let us sow the seeds of happiness together and laughter will sprout automatically.”

Maintaining that the root-cause of all Punjab problems is intellectual bankruptcy, Dr Singh says, “Able intellectual leadership is the urgent need for bailing out the state from its present imbroglio. The source of such leadership is in our rich heritage (virasat) which can be found from the universality of Guru Granth Sahib, Sufism and Vedic philosophy.”

He adds, “Guru Nanak taught us that the basis of this world is religion, not money, and we Punjabis are forgetting it. We have to look at our culture and tradition and hold on to them. All the religion evolved from the East and then why do we look at West for inspiration. Eastern thought is bound to bounce back and Western philosophy will wane.”

Dr Singh shares a parting thought, “The idea of oneness was given long back by Guru Nanak, who rose above boundaries of religion, caste, colour and united people on the basis of humanity.”—TNS
