Ludhiana, September 7
Arpinder Singh, who won the gold medal in triple jump event at the 18th Asian Games recently concluded in Indonesia, was honoured in his absence, during a function held at Guru Nanak Stadium here on Friday. The star athlete could not attend the felicitation function as he was in Czech Repulic to take part in the IAAF Continental Cup slated for September 8 and 9 wherein only eight jumpers from across the globe have been invited. Arpinder is to represent Asia.
Sukhdev Singh Pannu, who trained Arpinder, was also felicitated during the function organised by the SAI authorities. Pannu, who was athletics coach with the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Training Centre, Ludhiana, retired recently.
Lalita Sharma, Director In-charge, SAI, Regional Centre, Chandigarh, was the chief guest on the occasion. She appreciated the outstanding achievement by Arpinder Singh and also lauded coach Pannu for his guidance.
Harbans Singh, in-charge of the local centre, SAI, thanked the chief guest and other prominent dignitaries present there. He said the achievement by Arpinder would motivate others to work hard and excel to bring fame to the country.
Other prominent persons present were Rattan Singh Brar, ADCP, Ludhiana; Shivtar Singh Bajwa, senior vice-president, Punjab Football Association; Ravinder Singh, District Sports Officer, Ludhiana; coaches of SAI centre. — OC
