The city police have busted a gang of thieves involved in around 20 incidents of thefts. The said suspects had recently targeted a knitwear shop, situated in Ghra Bhan Market. They were arrested during a police probe.

The suspects have been identified as Safiq, a native of Uttar Pradesh, at present a resident of Guru Gobind Nagar, and Ajaij, a resident of Mayapuri, Tibba Road.

In a press conference here today, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Gurpreet Singh Sikand said the police had received a tip-off about location of the suspects today. Accordingly a police party conducted a raid and arrested the suspects, he added.

On December 27, the suspects had broken shutter of Dua Knitwear from where they had uprooted cash box containing Rs 43,000 in cash and some bill books of the shop, he said. Later, the suspects were identified through the CCTV footage of the area, he added.

Today, after their arrest, the police recovered the cash box, Rs 5,000 in cash, an iron rod and a bicycle from the possession of the suspects, he said. “One of the suspects in the case, who is still at large, has been identified as Amir,” the ADCP added.

During questioning, the suspects confessed to have committed around 20 thefts at shops and houses in various parts of the city during the past few months, the police said. “Interestingly, the suspects are not high-profile thieves as they commit burglaries on bicycles. More recovery of cash and stolen items from suspects is possible during further probe,” the police added.
