Ludhiana, June 16

The Tibba police today booked a man in a case of dowry death. The suspect, Pawan Mahato’s wife had committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at Subash Nagar.

The deceased, identified as Kanchan Devi (23), is survived by her son Kishan Kumar (3).

The complainant, Ram Dinesh, a resident of Kirti Nagar, Delhi, told the police that his daughter Kanchan was married to the suspect about four years ago. Before marriage, Pawan had an affair with a woman, Chanda, and he concealed this fact from his wife. ”Whenever my daughter requested her husband to end his affair with Chanda, he would beat her up. He threatened my daughter over dowry and asked her to bring a new motorcycle,” said Dinesh.

He alleged that his daughter, who was three months pregnant, lived in rented accommodation with her husband and a child in Subhash Nagar. On June 14, Pawan again thrashed his daughter, following which she took the extreme step.
