Singhvi: Want to challenge LoP rule

NEW DELHI: Congress leader Abhishek Singhvi today said he would like to challenge the rule the government cites to deny the Leader of Opposition post to the Congress in the Lok Sabha if his party permits him to.

New Delhi, June 7

Congress leader Abhishek Singhvi today said he would like to challenge the rule the government cites to deny the Leader of Opposition post to the Congress in the Lok Sabha if his party permits him to.

Singhvi said the rule that a party must have 10 per cent strength of the House to stake claim to the Leader of Opposition post was unconstitutional and had no statutory backing. Singhvi said what's not statutory cannot be legally enforced. “I want to challenge the rule in the court if my party permits. I have sought permission from the party in my personal capacity to challenge this rule. I will do so only if my party permits,” Singhvi said. — TNS
