The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) today backed the Narendra Modi government with regard hanging of 1993 Mumbai blasts convict Yakub Memon, saying it displayed all human values and democratic process in dealing with the issue.

Addressing a national seminar on border states development and security of the country, top RSS ideologue Indresh Kumar said: “The government ensured that Memon’s family was present at Nagpur on the day of the hanging and the body was handed to it. The government also allowed others to take part in funeral procession and provided land for the burial.” He said the Supreme Court did its duty. Judiciary’s job was not to deal with the public reaction and aftermath of its verdict. The situation following its verdict has to be tackled by the government, he added.

“The government followed the human values on account of which there was no untoward incident post-hanging. These democratic and human values are the intrinsic strength of India. We all saw the democratic process play out and we all enjoyed it,” said the RSS ideologue.

He said the same democratic norms were conspicuously missing in the last case. Although he did not name, it was amply clear to the audiences that the reference was to the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.
