BJP leader Gobind Ram Aggarwal, who is the “mandal pradhan” of the Ferozepur Cantonment area, was attacked by some unidentified persons with sharp-edged weapons on Wednesday.

He had gone to meet district BJP president Davinder Bajaj when the incident took place. As soon as he reached near Bajaj’s residence, his two-wheeler broke down. He called a mechanic and while he was waiting, around 8-10 assailants with covered faces arrived in two vehicles and thrashed Gobind Ram with baseball bats and sharp-edged weapons.

The incident took place near the Mori Gate area in the heart of the city in broad daylight. Eyewitnesses said Gobind Ram raised an alarm but the attackers continued to attack him and later, left him there in an unconscious condition. Later, some passersby took him to a private hospital, where he was referred to a Ludhiana hospital. Bajaj too reached the hospital along with his supporters.

He alleged that BJP workers are being targeted by rival political parties in the border district. He said he too was attacked during the Zila Parishad elections, adding that the party workers were feeling insecure and unsafe. Pushpinderpal Sharma, Station House Officer, Ferozepur, said the police were investigating. However, no FIR was registered till the story was filed.
