A senior judge of the Allahabad High Court, Justice Krishna Murari, is set to take over as the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. His name has been cleared for elevation as the Chief Justice and formal notification in this regard is expected to be issued soon.

Justice Murari will take over from Chief Justice Shiavax Jal Vazifdar, who retires early next month upon attaining the age of superannuation.

Known for his integrity, hard work, dedication and liberal attitude, Justice Murari’s understanding and deep appreciation of the judicial system has been honed over a long career as a practising lawyer and as a High Court judge.

His uncle, Justice GN Verma, was also a renowned Judge. Before being called to the Bench, Justice Murari was known for practice on the civil side and was considered proficient in company matters and consolidation cases.

Born on July 9, 1958, Justice Murari was elevated as Additional Judge on January 7, 2004, and took oath as a permanent judge on August 18, 2005. His elevation comes at a time when the High Court is facing acute shortage of judges. As of now, the HC has 50 judges, including the Chief Justice, against a sanctioned strength of 85.
