Chandigarh, May 16

There was not even a single student in over 50 government schools who could pass the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) Class X examinations, the result of which was declared recently.

Taking a serious note of the poor performance, the Education Department on Wednesday decided to summon heads of 374 government schools, which had a pass percentage of less than 25 per cent.

The Directorate of Education, in a communication sent to schools that performed poorly, said even though the result this year was better than the previous one, it was not up to the required standard. “The heads of the schools that fared poorly will be summoned to the head office,” a letter issued by the Assistant Director, Education Department, to heads of schools stated. The communication stated that the performance of these schools would be reviewed and efforts would be made for a better result next year.

As per a list prepared by the department, 54 schools had zero pass percentage, 150 schools had less than 10 pass percentage and 374 schools had less than 25 pass percentage.

Most of such schools are located in the border area. Around 75 per cent of the schools which delivered zero-per cent result were from the Majha region. Tarn Taran district fared the worst, with 31 of the 54 schools where no student passed. It was followed by Amritsar with six such schools.
