The Sangrur Sadar police have registered a case of fraud against two Patiala residents for allegedly duping Ghabdan village youth Sandeep Kumar of Rs 15 lakh on the pretext of providing him a New Zealand work permit.

Amrinder alleged that in April, he met Maninder Singh and Vikram Singh through his friend, Harjinder Singh. Both promised to arrange a two-year work permit for his nephew, Sandeep Kumar, who had done a diploma in electronics.

Amrinder said his family borrowed money from relatives and transferred Rs 14.5 lakh into the bank account of the duo on May 3. When they reached the New Delhi international airport on May 7, Sandeep’s visa was found fake.

“We also spent Rs 50,000 on the air ticket. We asked Maninder and Vikram to return our money, but they refused, following which we lodged a complaint in the Sangrur SSP’s office on May 14,” said Amrinder.

After an inquiry, the police registered a case under Sections 406, 420, 467, 468 and 120-B of the IPC against the duo. “We are conducting further investigation,” said ASI Jarnail Singh.
