Bathinda, September 19

Members of the MGNREGA Workers’ Union staged a protest in front of district administrative complex near Hanuman Chowk, demanding regularisation of jobs and increase in wages.

After continuing their protest for three consecutive days at BDPO office, the protestors shifted at a new site near a zila parishad office on Thursday.

The protestors alleged that despite repeated demands and working under the MGNREGA scheme, the state government has failed to regularise their services and has been stalling their demand for regular jobs for a long time. They raised slogans and threatened to intensify their agitation in the coming days.

Kor Singh, president of the union, said, “If our genuine demand is not fulfilled, we will continue our struggle in the future as well. The state government is not providing us work, which forced us to lodge a protest. Despite rendering our services diligently for the past many years, the government has not regularised our services. The BJP government has adopted anti-labour policies ever since it came to power in 2014. Labour laws have been repealed to benefit big entrepreneurs.”
