With about 45% vacant faculty posts, the University Institute of Applied Management Sciences (UIAMS), Panjab University, has proposed to start another MBA course in capital markets.

Giving details during a meet-the-press programme on Tuesday, Prof Sanjeev Kumar Sharma said there would be 22 seats and another five seats for NRIs.

“We provide real-life experience to students. To overcome staff crunch, we have appointed guest faculty. We had also written to the Vice-Chancellor for faculty recruitment four months ago,” Prof Upasana Joshi Sethi, Director, UIAMS, said.

The department has 16 teachers against the sanctioned strength of 29. There are 11 assistant professors against 19, three associate professors against five and two professors against five. The annual fee in UIAMS is Rs 2.45 lakh (one of the highest).

The department was set up in 2008 with a mandate to provide MBA in sectoral areas and streams with high growth potential. At present, it is providing MBA in banking and insurance, retail management, IT and telecom management, infrastructural management, pharmaceutical management and hospital management.

In July 2018, six UIAMS students went to Nottingham Trent University (NTU) for a three-week academic exchange programme. Twelve students are going in June-July this year. Recently, the department had also hosted a three-week exchange programme for 13 Nottingham Trent University (NTU) students.

“The objective is to harness true potential of its faculty to develop into a hub of management development,” Professor Sanjeev said.

Plans to have 3 distinct institutes

Centre for Leadership Development and Harnessing Human Potential; Centre for Public Policy Centre; Centre of Rural Development for focussed studies in topical areas. “These institutes will help faculty in executing research proposals,” said Prof Upasana Joshi Sethi, Director, UIAMS.
