A 17-year-old kabaddi player was found dead in front of the gate of his house at Chhintanwala village here in the wee hours of Monday.

The deceased, identified as Sukhbir Singh, was to join training at Bhadson. One of the neighbours saw the victim and informed the family after which the police were informed.

Narinder Kaur, mother of the deceased, said her son Sukhbir must have been taking drugs as he was under the influence of his friends. However, village residents and teammates refuted the theory stating that Sukhbir never took drugs as he was sincere towards his sports career.

Sukhbir Singh’s father had died in a road accident a few years ago while his grandparents  had also died sometime ago. Village residents Tehal Singh and Surjit Singh demanded that the police should thoroughly investigate the case to bring out the truth.

Sukhbir’s teammate Lakhbir Singh said the victim was a good player and was not taking drugs. He said Sukhbir had played for the state and was on the way to becoming a national player by sheer dint of hard work. Bhupinder Singh, a resident of Dhuri and relative of Sukhbir, termed it a murder. He said the police should investigate the matter and arrest the accused. According to sources, the police are trying to get the call details of Sukhbir to know who had made the last call to his mobile phone.

IO Mohan Singh said they received the information about the death of Sukhbir on Monday morning. He said the police were investigating the matter.
