Chandigarh: An unknown person broke into a pet store in Sector 24 and committed a theft. The complainant, Ramal Kumar, a resident of Sector 15, reported that Rs1.20 lakh and three mobile phones were stolen from the showroom in Sector 24. The suspect also stole a vehicle parked there, the keys of which were lying in the showroom. The Sector 11 police have registered a case. TNS

Mobile snatched

Chandigarh: A motorcycle-borne miscreant snatched a mobile phone from a girl near the Sector 25/38 light point. A case has been registered at the Maloya police station. TNS

PU Prof selected for ICCR’s Chair

Chandigarh: Dr Gurmeet Singh, associate professor and former chairperson, Department of Hindi, Panjab University, has been selected for deputation to ICCR’s Chair of Hindi at the University of Naples, L’Orientale, Italy. Singh will join the assignment next week. tns

City Men, women spikers log win

Chandigarh: Chandigarh men and women teams logged victories in their respective matches on the opening day of the 3rd Youth National Volleyball Championship in Rudrapur (Uttarakhand). In the men’s category, the local team defeated Pondicherry 25-22 25-23 25-16, followed by another convincing win over Madhya Pradesh 25-23 25-23 25-17. In the women’s event, the local team defeated Uttarakhand 25-8 25-23 25-15. tns

101 donate blood at Sec 42 college

Chandigarh: A blood donation camp was organised at Post Graduate Govt College for Girls, Sector- 42, to celebrate Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav today. The camp was inaugurated by Principal Nisha Aggarwal who appreciated the efforts of the organising committees and congratulated the students for being part of such a significant initiative. As many as 101 persons donated the blood. tns

PU’s netball team felicitated

Chandigarh: The Netball Sports Promotion Association felicitated Panjab University’s women team, which won the gold medal in All India Inter University Championship. Tejdeep Singh Saini, Director Sports, and NS Thakur, general secretary, Chandigarh Olympics Association, awarded the winners. tns

Swachh survey team in city

Chandigarh: A Swachh Survekshan team inspected different places in the city on Tuesday. The team is assessing the cleanliness in public parks, toilets and roadsides. The inspection is expected to take three-four days. An MC official said the team would take stock of the city’s waste management. It would inspect the garbage processing plant in Sector 25 and the waste-dumping site in Dadu Majra. Chandigarh had dropped from the last year’s eighth rank to 16th this year among cities with a population of over 10 lakh. TNS

Protest against JE’s suspension

Dera Bassi: Junior engineers of the Electricity Department of Mohali, Zirakpur and Lalru on Tuesday staged a protest in front of the gate of the XEN office here against the suspension of JE Amritpal Singh, who was suspended by the Council of Junior Engineers, Sohali circle, in a case of power theft. The case pertained to a shopping complex on the Chandigarh-Ambala road. The protesters condemned the decision of the council and said the JE had no role in the power theft. TNS

MC cancels rotary pact

Chandigarh: MC Commissioner Anindita Mitra today ordered cancellation of the MoU for maintenance of the Sector 4/5/9/8 roundabout. The roundabout was allotted to Sector 39-based Bhejo Logistic Pvt Ltd for its maintenance for a period of two years from June 12, 2021. The maintenance of the roundabout was not found to be satisfactory as per the terms and conditions of the MoU.
