Mohali, August 18

A 23-year-old youth died due to suspected drug overdose on Friday night.

The victim has been identified as Deepinder Malik, who hailed from Hisar in Haryana and was residing in Sector 21, Chandigarh.

The Nayagaon police have booked two persons — the victim’s friend Akash with whom he had allegedly injected drug and a woman drug peddler, identified as Bala, for culpable homicide. Sources said the police had arrested Akash. The police said Deepinder, who was preparing for IELTS exam, along with Akash, a resident of Rajpura, had procured drug vials from the peddlers at Sector 38 and used them at Sector 22, Chandigarh. In his statement, Akash told the police that after taking drugs, they went to Chandigarh Club. “Deepinder’s condition started deteriorating in the club’s parking lot. Then, Akash took him to a hotel in Nayagaon where his condition worsened. Deepinder was later taken to the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital in Sector 16 where he died,” said the police.

The police said the case was registered against the accused on a complaint of Harpal Singh, the victim’s uncle.

Sources said the police had also procured the CCTV footage in which the victim, along with his friend, was seen roaming in front of Chandigarh Club.

Deepinder Malik is the third victim of suspected drug overdose in Mohali district in a period of around one month. A 20-year-old from Ropar had died due to suspected drug overdose on July 22 in Kharar. On July 25, another youth of 22 had died in Kharar for the similar reason.
