A team from the National Green Tribunal (NGT) today reached the city for an inspection of the solid waste management poject. The team pointed out garbage collected at various spots and condition of the Bari and Chhoti Nadi in the city.

The team was in the city to check if directions of the NGT were being followed by the Municipal Corporation (MC) or not. The team comprising Rajwant Sandhu, chairperson, NGT, and Dr Puran Singh, joint director, Swachh Bharat Mission, inspected the cleanliness projects of the MC in the town.

Civic body officials gave a presentation of their plans for cleanliness through various programmes, including door-to-door collection of household waste, its segregation and transportation through semi-underground dustbins to the team.

Most importantly, officials in the team gave directions to the MC to follow guidelines of the solid waste management other than covering the whole garbage dump at Sanauri Adda with soil.  Now the MC, which had started covering the garbage dump will segregate garbage. The civic body will also produce manure from biodegradable waste and sell plastic and non-biodegradable items recovered from the garbage.

The MC Mayor, Sanjeev Kumar Sharma, said, “The team has directed us to setup the solid waste management plant by October 2019. They also issued guidelines for recently commenced project for covering the garbage dump at Sanauri Adda. Now, the soil cover on the garbage dump will be removed.”

“The team visited the garbage dump site at Sanauri Adda. They also inspected compost pits made for segregation of the household waste at Yadawindra Enclave on the Nabha road and at the Government Polytechnic College,” he added.

Joint Commissioner Ankur Mahendru said, “The team was here to review the progress of establishing the solid waste management plant. They were satisfied with our work and directed us to speed up the process to replicate it elsewhere.”

“Team officials directed us to make the solid waste management plant more extensive by adding hazardous, animal and biological waste,” he added.
