The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday announced that it would support Jannayak Janata Party (JJP)-backed candidate Digvijay Chautala in the Jind byelection scheduled for January 28.

AAP Rajya Sabha member Sushil Kumar Gupta announced his party’s support to Digvijay Chautala and said that they would also campaign for him.

Gupta, while talking to The Tribune over phone, said that AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal had sent him to Jind to offer the party’s support to Digvijay Chautala.

Asked whether AAP’s support to Digvijay Chautala also means that the two parties would contest the upcoming parliamentary elections together, Gupta said that for the time being his party’s support was only for the Jind bypoll.

Gupta, while speaking to mediapersons at Jind, alleged that the BJP, the Congress and the INLD had divided the people of Haryana on the basis of religion, caste and creed and corruption has assumed an alarming proportion.

He said that the BJP had made several unsuccessful attempts to disturb harmony and brotherhood in the state. He added that AAP decided to support the JJP because the ideologies of the two parties have similarities.

Gupta said that both parties wanted to save Haryana from nepotism, casteism, corruption and use of religion for political purpose. On the directions of Kejriwal, every volunteer of AAP would campaign door-to-door for Digvijay Chautala to ensure his victory in the bypoll, he added.

Nishan Singh, state president of the JJP, said that it was an alliance between two political parties having similar ideologies.
