Mandi, February 5

Heavy snowfall hampered snow-clearing operation on the Manali-Leh highway between Manali and Keylong today. It started snowing in Manali and Lahaul region since this morning, which hampered the restoration work on this highway. As a result, this highway remained blocked to traffic between Manali and Keylong via Atal tunnel for the second consecutive day today.

According to District Disaster Management Authority Lahaul and Spiti, 90 cm snow was recorded on the road at the south portal of Atal tunnel today, while at the north portal of the tunnel it was 30 cm. Due to heavy snowfall in the region, this highway could not be restored for traffic and the residents of Lahaul valley were cut off from the rest of the state.

According to the police, the Keylong-Udaipur road has been blocked to traffic in Lahaul and Spiti. Around 30 cm of snow was recorded at Udaipur in Lahaul and Spiti.

Transportation services were disrupted because of the blockade of the Manali-Leh highway and the Keylong-Udaipur road. However Kaza-Sumdo road is open in the district. Lahaul and Spiti SP Mayank Chaudhary said that police jawans were working in sub-zero temperature in the district for restoration work.

In Kullu district, as many as 76 roads are blocked, while 247 electricity transformers are disrupted.

Kullu Additional District Magistrate Ashwani Kumar said 19 roads were blocked in Banjar, 9 in Kullu, 22 in Manali and 24 in Nirmand subdivisions of Kullu district. Similarly 182 electricity transformers were disrupted in Manali, 52 in Kullu and 13 in Thalout divisions in the district. Due to this, transportation services have been disrupted in Banjar, Manali, Kullu and Nirmand. Due to disruption in electricity transformers, a huge part of Kullu district is reeling under darkness.

The lower region of Mandi district experienced rain today, while higher reaches like Shikari Devi hills, Prashar lake area, Kamrunag valley and Seraj region received fresh snow, which crippled normal life badly.
