Palampur, February 5
After being hit by heavy snowfall in the past four days, Bir Billing road has been shut down. Still, a large number of tourists and taxi drivers are taking a big risk and reaching the world famous paragliding site. The tourists had been advised by local authorities against travelling beyond Bir due to unsafe driving conditions.
Baijnath DSP Puran Chand said roads beyond Bir had become extremely slippery. Due to extreme conditions, ice formed on the road made travelling dangerous. He said he had directed the SHO to put a barrier at Bir to stop the vehicles and also initiate action against the erring taxi drivers, who were misguiding the tourists and putting their lives at risk.
He said the valley received heavy snowfall in recent days, resulting in a drop in temperature. The highways leading to Billing, Multhan, Kothi Kohar and Luhardi became risky to travel and roads were also covered with snow.
On the narrow Bir Billing road, several fatal accidents have taken place in the past. Paragliding is banned every year for two months during monsoon to avoid mishaps.
