City cagers outwit Hoshiarpur to begin on a high note

LUDHIANA: Hosts Ludhiana district faced a little resistance from Hoshiarpur, whom they outwitted 87-62 in the men section to begin their campaign on a positive note in the 68th Senior Punjab Basketball Championship for Men and Women that got off at Guru Nanak Stadium here today.

Ludhiana, December 23

Hosts Ludhiana district faced a little resistance from Hoshiarpur, whom they outwitted 87-62 in the men section to begin their campaign on a positive note in the 68th Senior Punjab Basketball Championship for Men and Women that got off at Guru Nanak Stadium here today.

The encounter witnessed a fine display of ball control and mobility by the players of both sides, in which Ludhiana eventually came out triumphant. Aftab played the major role for Ludhiana by chipping in with 19 points to steer his side to wrap up the issue.

Earlier, in the opening match of the championship in the men’s section, SAS Nagar (Mohali) overwhelmed Sangrur 62-26 in which Harmit was the main contributor, who dropped in 20 baskets.

In another match in the men’s section, Ferozepur scripted a facile 41-9 victory over Ropar. Ferozepur players’ dominance was so complete that they gave no chance to their opponents to settle down and raced to a comfortable win. The architect of their victory was Gursewak Singh, who accounted for 17 points.

The match played between Fazilka and Mansa turned out to be a well fought one, in which the former romped home winners 56-43. The hero of their victory was Jagmit, who scored as many as 34 points to enable his team clinch the issue.

The fifth match was played between Faridkot and Gurdaspur, in which Harman stole limelight, securing 33 points and helped the former come out victorious without facing much resistance (73-49).Though the championship was formally inaugurated by Member of Parliament Ravneet Singh Bittu in the evening, the matches began in the morning. MLA Bharat Bhushan Ashu; Yurinder Singh Hayer, Senior Vice-President, Punjab Basketball Association (PBA), and others were present.
