Ludhiana, March 17

The Ludhiana police have cracked the 2-kg gold loot at Ghumar Mandi with the arrest of two robbers. Though police officials were mum about the development, sources in the department confirmed to The Tribune that arrests had been made in the case.

According to sources, the Toyota Fortuner which was used in the daylight robbery on January 29 has also been recovered by the police. The sources said at least two robbers had been arrested.

Gangsters involved

A police official, requesting anonymity, confirmed gold worth Rs 80 lakh was looted by four gangsters based in Punjab. While one belongs to Amritsar, two are from Nawanshahr district and one from Khanna. One of them is said to be an NRI who had returned from a European country, and he was the one who entered the VK Jewellers shop and talked in English with the owner Vinay. He had said: “Where is the bloody cash”.

A notorious gangster facing several heinous crimes, who is a native of Nawanshahr district, had planned the robbery. At present, the gangster lived in Gurgaon along with his girlfriend. The Ludhiana police had also conducted raids at his whereabouts in Gurgaon, but both managed to escape.

According to the sources, the shop owner was called by the senior police officials for the identification of the arrested robbers today.

The sources said the police had some clues about the key accused, a notorious gangster, and they had been on his trail for the past two weeks.

Those arrested have been kept at the CIA wing where they are being interrogated by Commissioner of Police Rakesh Agrawal, DCP (Detective) SS Dhindsa and other senior officials.


Notorious gangster mastermind

A notorious gangster facing several cases of heinous crimes, who is a native of Nawanshahr district, had planned the robbery. At present, the gangster lived in Gurgaon along with his girlfriend. The Ludhiana police had also conducted raids at his whereabouts in Gurgaon, but both managed to escape.
