Good news for book lovers as MC begins tendering process to set up new libraries

In an effort to promote a vibrant culture of book reading, new libraries are to be established at around 14 sites in the city. The Municipal Corporation (MC) has floated tenders for the construction of the libraries at the majority of the identified locations in different constituencies and the start of the work is anticipated shortly, contingent upon the successful completion of the tendering process.

According to information, libraries are set to be established at the city’s identified sites in the Ludhiana East, Ludhiana West, Ludhiana North, Ludhiana South, Ludhiana Central, Atam Nagar and Sahnewal constituencies.

The civic body has so far floated tenders for the establishment of the libraries at Shaheed Master Karnail Singh Nagar (Phase III), the PUNSUP office, and Janjh Ghar, Model Town. Additionally, other tenders have been floated for the construction of libraries at various locations in the Ludhiana North Constituency, the construction of a library in Banda Bahadur Colony, Subhash Nagar in the Ludhiana East constituency, a library in Ghora Colony in the Central constituency, a library in Habib Ganj, also in the Central constituency, a library at the rear of Blind School in the Sahnewal constituency and the renovation of a library in Shaheedi Park in the Central constituency.

It has been learnt that technical bids for the library projects will likely to be opened this month, followed by the opening of financial bids.

MC Commissioner Sandeep Rishi said there were plans to establish around 14 libraries in various constituencies in the jurisdiction of the Ludhiana MC. Approximately Rs 64 lakh is allocated to be spent on the establishment of the libraries in each constituency. The funds, provided by the District Planning Board of the state government, will cover the cost of construction, purchase of books and furniture for the libraries.

A city resident, Deepak, said: “It is a good and decisive step taken for the establishment of new libraries. We hope that the corporation will run the libraries in a proper manner after establishment so that the public can avail full benefits out of these.”

According to information, libraries are set to be established at city’s identified sites in the Ludhiana East, Ludhiana West, Ludhiana North, Ludhiana South, Ludhiana Central, Atam Nagar and Sahnewal constituencies.
