J&K men stun Himachal, Punjab eves lose to Delhi in basketball championship

Ludhiana, December 9

Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) scored a stunning victory over Himachal Pradesh (HP) in the men’s section while Punjab women lost to Delhi on the penultimate day of the 71st Senior North Zone Basketball Championship, being played at Guru Nanak Stadium here on Thursday.

J&K players earned an early lead and went on to exert full pressure on their opponents who failed to match up the agility and pace, exhibited by the former, due to which Jammu and Kashmir won the verdict 108-70.

In the women’s section, hosts Punjab fought it valiantly before losing it 75-85 to suffer their first defeat whereas Haryana beat Himachal Pradesh 60-37. In the men’s section, Haryana outplayed Chandigarh 94-82.

Ajay Kumar Jindal, senior advocate of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and former law professor, Karanbir Singh Sekhon, a senior audit officer from Toronto, were the guests of honour today.

Teja Singh Dhaliwal, general secretary, Punjab Basketball Association (PBA), complimented coaches of participating states who provided a chance to witness some finest players of the country and are also playing in international tournaments.

Brij Bhushan Goyal, treasurer, District Basketball Association, thanked physiotherapists of All Saints Colleges for providing free medical assistance.

Arjuna awardee Suman Sharma, Avinash Maini and Yurinder Hayer and Vijay Chopra, senior vice-president and finance secretary, respectively, of the PBA, were among those others present.
