Ludhiana’s Sister Mirabelle dies at 101

Sister Mirabelle

Ludhiana, February 26

Sister Mirabelle, who served Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, Sarabha Nagar for over 55 years, breathed her last on Tuesday at the age of 101.

For all these decades, educating children was her mission. She taught them the importance of discipline in life.

People close to her said she was hale and hearty throughout her life, except that she was suffering from asthma. She had a sharp memory and always stood for women rights.

School principal Sister Reshmi said age had restricted her mobility and in the last few months, she was wheelchair-bound. Sister Mirabelle was honoured with “Lifetime Achievement Award” by the Punjab Government for her noble services in 2016, the principal added.

An arden fan of The Tribune, Sister Mirabelle, in an interview in 2016, had said that she was reading the paper for the past five decades. Hailing from Mangalore, Sister Mirabelle came to Ludhiana in 1965, which became her home.

Everyone had great respect for her selfless devotion of providing good moral values to the students.

Going to the chapel was a routine, which she followed throughout her life. Her motive was to teach students the value of simplicity. She was considered to be the “soul of the school”. Though she was not active in teaching but she ran a bookshop and canteen in the school several years back. She always believed that parents should spend time with children to make them good citizens. The younger generation must not lose respect for elders and should be compassionate towards the poor and needy, Sister Mirabelle felt.

Her funeral services will be held in Holy Cross Catholic Church, Sarabha Nagar, at 3.30 pm on Thursday.

Former Education Minister Daljit Singh Cheema offered his condolences. — TNS
