NEP to make students future-ready: PM

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said all eyes were on the implementation of the new National Education Policy 2020 that would make students future-ready and lay the foundation for new India, taking it to great heights in the 21st century.

Addressing an Education Ministry conclave on NEP’s higher education goals, the PM said the aim was to make India powerful, empower students and provide them opportunities to grow.

Welcoming as “healthy” the ongoing ideological debate on the policy, he said something good would emerge from discussions and that none had termed the policy biased. He said it was natural for some to ask how such major reforms would translate into action.

“All eyes are now on NEP implementation and your role is crucial. A new era of dialogue between stakeholders is all set to begin. All of you should prepare a roadmap for the policy’s rollout, convert it into action and set timelines. I assure you of political will to do this,” the PM told heads of higher educational institutions who joined the event digitally. Modi said it had become imperative for the education system to transform itself in view of the changing world order.

Bats for mother tongue

PM Modi tried to settle the English versus mother tongue debate saying there could be no discussion on the fact that children learn better in their mother tongue. The NEP has recommended instruction in mother tongue till Class V and preferably even Class VIII and beyond.
