During a district-level Lohri event organised by the Women and Child Development Department at Aam Khas Bagh, DC Parneet Shergill said that in most religious texts, women have been given a high status, and Indian history is full of achievements of brave women. She added that in modern times, education is of the utmost importance and urged the parents present at the event to not deprive their children of higher education. The DC said that girls should be provided the same opportunities as boys, adding that many schemes are being run by the Department of Women and Child Development for the welfare of girls.

Addressing the gathering, Fatehgarh Sahib MLA Lakhbir Singh said women have proven their abilities time and again in every field, adding that many schemes are being run by the state government to ensure a bright future for girls.

The MLA and the DC felicitated parents of 51 newborn girls at the event. The event featured bhangra and gidha performances.
