Four persons died and one was injured when a speeding SUV hit an e-rickshaw on the Jalandhar-Amritsar highway last night.

A speeding car (CH 01-AP-9952) hit the e-rickshaw near Vidhipur Crossing on the highway. Two persons died on the spot and and two others were injured and taken to the Civil Hospital, Jalandhar. They also died during treatment.

The deceased have been identified as Jagdish Chander of Kahlwan village, Paramjit Singh Pamma, Harpreet Happy and Pankaj. The injured person is identified as Gobinda who is under treatment at the hospital.

An FIR was registered at the Maqsudan police station against an unidentified person under Sections 304, 338, 427 and 279 of the IPC.

Kin of the deceased persons also held a dharna outside the police station, blocking the highway and demanding the arrest of the owner of the car. They said they won’t cremate the bodies of their kin until the car owner was caught.

Jagdish Chander (42), the sole bread winner of his family, was among the deceased. Jagdish was the driver of the e-rickshaw.

SSP, Jalandhar, Mukhwinder Singh Bhullar, said, “The police are ascertaining the identity of the Audi SUV driver. The car was bought from Bathinda and, as per investigation, the driver possibly hails from Batala. He is likely to be arrested by tomorrow.”
