Abohar, July 25

Students of Homoeopathic Medical College Abohar (HMCA) organised a candlelight march on Tuesday night as the police allegedly took no action on a cheating complaint filed by students and staff against the management on July 7.

Leading the march, the HMCA doctors thanked the family of late Ami Chand, nambardar of Azeemgarh village, for knocking the doors of the Punjab and Haryana High Court against the management.

The family claimed that they had gifted the land to develop a college to promote homoeopathy, but the management indulged in breach of trust and basic concept of agreement by raising an engineering college on the same premises.

The management failed to repay loan worth Rs 6.6 crore that is now Rs 8.8 crore, following which Punjab and Sind Bank sealed the college.

Raising slogans, the protesters demanded that a case should be registered against the management and action be initiated against Punjab and Sind Bank officials who advanced loan without verifying the credentials of the property.

A few days ago, the students had made the management officials captive for two hours when the latter were holding a meeting at the college.

The officials were released after the intervention of the police. The protesters claimed that that no solution was offered even after two weeks and the management was now reportedly planning to merge it with another institution.

Earlier, some protesters had damaged the car of a senior functionary of the management when he was attending a meeting called by the local administration.

Affiliated to Guru Ravidas Ayurved University, Hoshiarpur, the institute got recognition from the Council of Homoeopathic System of Medicines, Punjab, in 1975. Bhai Kanhaiya Sewa Society Goniana (Bathinda) had taken over its control in 1990. The bank officials sealed the college on July 6 and students and staff were asked to vacate the hostel.
