CID Patiala branch assistant sub-inspector ''shoots himself dead''

PATIALA: An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) with Punjab Police shot himself dead with his service revolver on Sunday night. The deceased has been identified as Harmail Singh.

An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) with Punjab Police shot himself dead with his service revolver on Sunday night. The deceased has been identified as Harmail Singh, a resident of Mohi Kalan village in Banur.

The police said the incident took place around 11 pm.

According to the police, the 47-year-old Harmail, who was a bachelor, accidentally shot himself while he was in his car at underpass of 21 Number flyover.

He was rushed to hospital where he died at 4 am on Monday. Harmail, who was recently promoted to ASI, was posted at CID branch Patiala.   

The police said the family did not suspect foul play. The brother of the deceased told the police that it was not suicide but an accident.

The police said they had registered a case under Section 174 of the IPC on the statement of the family.

Civil Lines SHO Rahul Kaushal said the post-mortem had been conducted and investigation is under way.
