The Punjab Police reportedly let off Jagtar Singh Johal’s newlywed wife Gurpreet Kaur, who was accompanying him when he was arrested at Rama Mandi here on November 6.

Gurpreet, who married Johal on October 18, is allegedly in possession of his UK passport, the document that can prove he is a British national. Without the passport, the police are unable to approach the UK Government to get evidence against Johal.

Mandeep Kaur, his mother-in-law, said the police were targeting her family as no one from Johal’s family was residing in India.

“The police are asking us whether he had travelled to Pakistan. They have repeatedly searched our house and detained my husband and close relatives,” she said.

Johal’s family members in Glasgow have reportedly switched off their mobile phones since his arrest. Residents of Gaggar Patti, his native village near Jandiala, have failed to identify him, claiming that he rarely paid a visit.

According to them, Johal’s family has four acres of agricultural land, given on lease to a friend for the past 10 years.

Gurpreet’s family has expressed ignorance about her whereabouts, but it has not yet lodged a police complaint to trace her. “My son-in-law will prove his innocence at the right time,” Mandeep said.
