Amritsar, November 16

The reopening of the Kartarpur corridor ahead of the 552nd Parkash Purb of Guru Nanak Dev brought cheer to pilgrims who gathered to collect their passports at the SGPC office inside the Golden Temple complex.

A 855-member jatha will cross over to Pakistan to pay their obeisance at the historic Sikh shrine. While Malerkotla’s Joginder Kaur welcomed the announcement, Sangrur’s Ranjit Kaur and Manjit Singh of Mehta village thanked the central government.

Immediately after Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the reopening of the corridor on Twitter, SGPC president Bibi Jagir Kaur, in a hurriedly convened press conference, said she would lead a jatha to the Kartarpur shrine on November 19. Its entire cost will be borne by the SGPC.

Expressing gratitude to the Almighty, she thanked PM Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and External Affairs Minister Subramaniam Jaishankar. She recalled that the SGPC had written several times to the Centre, seeking the reopening of the corridor.

The SGPC chief said she spoke to Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee president Amir Singh and former president Bishan Singh and they assured of making all arrangements for the jatha, which will include ragis and provisions for langar, by November 19.

Move in line with people’s wishes: SAD

Nawanshahr: SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal on Tuesday said the reopening of the Kartarpur corridor was in line with the sentiments of the Sikh community and Guru Nanak Naam Lewa sangat worldwide. He said the SAD as well as the SGPC had constantly urged the Prime Minister to honour the sentiments of the Sikh community by reopening the corridor. TNS
